Frequently Asked Questions

A Legal Nurse Consultant is a registered nurse with clinical experience who analyzes medical records through a legal lens. LNCs help attorneys identify medical red flags, causation issues, treatment inconsistencies, and standard-of-care concerns early in a case—before significant litigation resources are committed. The goal is to support informed decision-making, case valuation, and strategy development.

LNCs most commonly support personal injury, medical malpractice, workers’ compensation, and complex injury cases where medical records drive liability, causation, or damages. Services are especially valuable in cases involving multiple providers, extensive treatment histories, pre-existing conditions, or disputed causation.

Medical records are reviewed chronologically and clinically to identify gaps in care, deviations from expected treatment, causation concerns, and documentation issues that may impact case value. Analysis focuses on facts supported by the records—not opinions on liability—and is presented in concise, attorney-usable formats.

Legal Nurse Consultants typically serve as non-testifying consultants. The work is intended for internal case evaluation, strategy, and preparation. When expert testimony is required, LNC analysis often helps attorneys determine whether retaining a medical expert is warranted and how to focus that expert’s review.

LNCs provide early, cost-effective medical insight before the expense of expert retention. While medical experts are essential for opinions and testimony, LNCs help attorneys determine if and when expert involvement is justified. Flat-fee LNC services often cost less than a single associate hour and significantly less than expert review, making them ideal for early screening and decision points.

All work is conducted as confidential attorney work product. Records are handled using secure, encrypted transfer methods, and HIPAA-compliant practices are followed at all times. NDAs and firm-preferred portals are welcomed to align with internal protocols.

Most services are offered on a flat-fee basis to provide cost predictability and efficiency—often comparable to, or less than, the cost of a single associate or senior paralegal hour. For firms requiring ongoing support, retainer-based hourly services are available for overflow work, litigation support, or complex case needs.

Potential standard-of-care concerns are identified by comparing documented care to accepted clinical guidelines, typical treatment pathways, and nursing and medical practice standards. Findings are framed as record-based observations to assist attorneys in determining whether further expert review is appropriate.

Collaboration is tailored to each firm’s workflow. Some attorneys use LNC services at intake or early evaluation, while others engage support at key litigation milestones. Communication is concise, responsive, and focused on providing actionable insight without disrupting existing processes.

Savant RN Legal Nurse Consulting focuses on early, decision-driven medical analysis designed to support litigation strategy—not volume summaries. Services emphasize clarity, efficiency, and practical insight, with flat-fee options that align with how law firms manage risk, time, and cost.
